Mother's Day: Sharon Koshul Memorial Prize in Animal Law

Today I am reflecting on the amazing memories that I was able to share with my mother Sharon and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to call such a kind and funny woman my mom.  She was my best friend and I miss her deeply.

Compassion and caring for animals were essential parts of my mother’s life and she would do anything she could to help an animal in need. Although she didn’t have the means to make it easy for her to do so, she had empathy, compassion, and motivation.

Following my mother’s passing, my son Sid and I established the Sharon Koshul Memorial Prize in Animal Law, which is offered annually to a J.D. student enrolled in the Peter A. Allard School of Law who demonstrates academic excellence in a course in Animal Law.

My mother saw the advancement of Animal Law as the most effective way to advocate for and to protect animals, and as one of her proudest days was the day my son was called to the Bar, this prize is so meaningful to us.

Her memory reminds me that it costs nothing to be kind and that ALL animals are worthy of our protection.
